Changes to AI tool subscription packages can pose an operational risk for SMEs that have integrated these tools into their daily work. Anthropic’s removal of Claude Code from the pricing page for its $20 Pro plan, followed by its reversal and explanation that the change was a 2% test, illustrated why this dependency needs to be assessed. Rather than a permanent price increase, the incident involved brief uncertainty about the conditions of access to the service.

For SMEs, the core issue is not the cost of a single subscription. When workflows, data and integrations are tied to one provider, switching to an alternative system can become difficult. A reduction in subscription coverage or the withdrawal of access to a model in use can affect business continuity as well as budgets. AI investment decisions therefore need to consider portability and infrastructure control alongside features and pricing.
